While my first love was SF, I read widely in YA, urban fantasy, police procedurals, middle-grade, and non-fiction.
There's a long tradition or formula in action mysteries where the protagonist gets beat up at the climax of the novel (just think Dick Francis or Tony Hillerman). While Nevada Barr provided her usual stellar performance of the beautiful language and descriptions of Isle Royal, the graphically described heroine abuse just left me cold.
If you are already a fan of Anna Pigeon, this book may provide an enjoyable diversion. If you are new to Nevada Barr and the series, I highly recommend that you start back up and start earlier in the series.
