The City of Ember - Jeanne DuPrau The City of Ember is a solid middle grade novel centering on a boy-girl pair who take the initiative to discover. While somewhat simplistic for the adult reader, this book should appeal to upper elementary school aged readers. It is perhaps unfortunate that the early portion of the book doesn't focus more on Droon, as male readers may mistakenly get the impression that City of Ember is a “girl” book, when in reality it is more balanced.
