While my first love was SF, I read widely in YA, urban fantasy, police procedurals,  middle-grade, and non-fiction.

The Dragon of Trelian - Michelle Knudsen Nicely done middle-grade fantasy about a girl and her dragon, whoops no, [b:The Dragon of Trelian|4926996|The Dragon of Trelian (Trelian, #1)|Michelle Knudsen|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320451741s/4926996.jpg|4992600] is a nicely done fantasy about a young man apprenticed to the King's Mage. The story is definitely strengthened by the partnership between Meg and Calen and they are given pretty much equal billing. As a result the book should appeal to both boys and girls. It's a relatively straightforward story with a surprising villain, betrayal and a big battle at the climax.

My 3rd grade son enjoyed reading the book after Michelle Knudsen visited our elementary school this year.
